Recorder Lessons

The recorder is pretty much known as a beginner instrument, you know, that squeaky little plastic instrument most kids learn at school? Well, it is just that, and being a relatively small, simple and sturdy instrument, the recorder is a great instrument for anyone to learn!

There is a small and secretive society, however, who have harnessed the great beauty and ancient power of this little instrument… a group who play the recorder the way it was intended…. no, not really, but it is a real instrument, with a great and rich history… Did you know that the recorder is a baroque instrument? (the baroque era was before Beethoven or Mozart’s time) It was played by very talented and important people, for royalty, and composers were commissioned to create more and more intricate and beautiful pieces. (They ended up having huge competition between them, which got really heated and interesting, but that’s another story…)

So, like any musical instrument, the recorder takes time and practice to learn, but because of its simple nature, it is a great way to get started with music. How far you choose to take it is entirely up to you, and it can be lots of fun however you choose to explore it.

As with the violin (see violin page on this website), the recorder helps you develop the connections between the right and left sides of the brain, helping you become more intelligent with logical and creative areas in all aspects of your life. It helps with finger agility, problem solving, eye-hand co-ordination, eye movement, appreciation of culture and history and music. It’s also really easy to get an awesome sound out of the recorder, so it’s a great confidence booster!!

Star Gazers loves performing, so we jump at any opportunity to have a show or enter into external exams. We currently use The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music as our external examiners and enjoy the outside advice we get from professional musicians.

The recorder comes in different sizes, which have different sounds and fingering. Allow me to introduce you to the recorder family:
