Music Lessons

Would you like your little one to learn music?  There is nothing as precious as the gift of a skill, and learning to appreciate music could be the most exciting memory your child keeps!

Register today for: Musical Monkeys!!

Children below school-going age often miss out on the magical experience that so many extra murals give.  Learning a formal instrument,  in a classical environment can often be extremely taxing on a little one’s concentration and self esteem and this is such a pitty!  Children at nursery school age are at a developmental stage where they are able not only to learn concepts of music, but to begin to grow a true and deep love for it.

Luckily, programmes have been developed that can ensure that your little one doesn’t miss out on this life-changing adventure.  Based on the Orff method of music education, my Musical Monkeys class will begin to introduce the children to musical concepts such as time, timbre, form, mood, texture, pitch and beat.  The Orff method of teaching music, believes that children should first hear, then do, then create and then only see.  This means that children are not forced to learn music theory before they have had a chance to understand and appreciate it.  The Orff method also believes that everyone has the capacity to learn music.  We are, after all, all built with an internal rhythm-maker, our heart.  So Musical Monkeys goes from the known (the heart and its rhythm) to the unknown (the complexities and intricacies of music), allowing each child to follow their path to a love of music and appreciation of culture through play, fun and hands-on experience.  (Children even get to make their own instruments from time to time!)

I began music when I was very young, playing with my father.  I received formal  training on the recorder from age 8 and formal training on the violin from age 11.  In my first year of teacher’s training college, I specialised in music education, where I learnt the class music principals I use with children today.  I am currently working for myself, with an extra mural centre called Star Gazers.  The centre offers adults and children the following:  arts and crafts, violin,  beginner guitar, recorder, music theory, Musical Monkeys children’s class, sign language, extra lessons and homework supervision.

For children to join the Musical Monkeys class, they should be between 3 and 6 years old.  Classes mostly follow themes, and so the interests of the school or the child can be linked into their music learning.
